Does anyone remember that Richard Burton was nominated seven times for a best actor Academy Award but never won?

Elizabeth Taylor does.

From her wheelchair onstage, Taylor accepted an award for artistic excellence in international entertainment at Thursday’s BAFTA/LA Britannia Awards Gala in the Beverly Hilton ballroom.

Looking a bit like a rolling table in a Turkish bazaar — an Indian bedspread-fabric skirt, iridescent silk wrap, embroidered blouse and an enormous ethnic beaded necklace — Taylor, still funny and feisty at 73, suggested that perhaps "we should do something" about her late husband’s long overdue Oscar. Is the academy listening?

To which Shirley MacLaine, who introduced the grand Dame, joked, "I’ll talk to him tonight."

At least, I think she was joking.
