Despite the warning from "Kyle XY" producers that the series would end in a cliffhanger, it was still a shock to see the magnitude of what was left up in the air.
Spoilers ahead designed by Latnok. You've been warned.
Without going into the entire episode blow by blow, let's just say that yes, the producers had planned for a season finale, but had expected the show to be renewed, not canceled. Thus, the open ending. Unfortunately, ABC Family didn't follow through with its end of the bargain.. It's frustrating, to say the least.
The only satisfying events that happened in the episode:
- Smarmy, sneering Nate gets knocked out … twice. I want a bigger send-off for him, but once again, I'll take it.
- Jessi and Amanda actually square off, with Amanda showing a bit of
steel — first by taking out Nate and then by confessing that she's
going to ask Kyle to take her back. Wow, actual personality!
- We discover that not only is Latnok continuing Adam Baylin's experiment, but they're planning to create a whole slew of little Kyle XYs a la "The Boys From Brazil." Creepy, but intriguing.
- After getting in a snit when Andy leaves him, Josh makes up with her via webcam. They'll try the long-distance cyber thing. I can deal with that.
Of course, these small plot victories pale in comparison to the huge cliffhanger. You know what I'm talking about. Yes, just as Kyle is about to give in to his dark side and finish off Cassidy, the evil one reveals that they share the same mom. Yup. Kyle, meet your biological half brother.
Cut to black.
UPDATE: Zap2it's Korbi Ghosh talked to ABC Family, and they have no plans to make "Kyle XY" webisodes or a movie to offer closure.
What did you think? How can ABC Family redeem itself? Will a special Kyle XY movie be enough? What other stuff did you enjoy or want from the finale?
