Demi Moore’s response to a fan on Twitter who threatened to kill herself may have saved that woman’s life on Friday.
A San Jose woman using the Twitter handle “Sandieguy” had sent Moore the following message early Friday morning: “Getting a knife, a big one that is sharp. Going to cut my arm down the whole arm so it doesn’t waste time,” reports MSNBC.
This was followed by the message, “gbye … gonna kill myself now.”
In response, Moore posted that message on her own page, adding, “hope you are joking.”
This exchange was potentially read by the actress’ more than 380,000 followers.
Fans responded, some sending messages through the Twitterverse and some calling the San Jose Police Department from far around the country. Officers were able to locate the woman and she was “taken for evaluation.”
Moore thanked her followers with a few more tweets.
“Thanks everyone for reaching out to the San Jose PD i am told they are aware and no need to call anymore. I do not know this woman,” she posted. “I am inspired by the enormous response of humanity here and thank you … It is my understanding that the situation was not a joke and that through the collective efforts here action was taken to provide help!”
Moore and her husband Ashton Kutcher have accounts under the usernames “mrskutcher” and “aplusk.” They are among numerous celebrities and public figures who have joined the micro-blogging site Twitter in order to give live updates of their life and thoughts.
Because of the immediacy of the message and the potential to reach any follower at any time, Twitter is a far-reaching tool that one student who was arrested and thrown into an Egyptian jail once used to free himself.
