Disney Channel’s “Jonas” debut blow-out Saturday was strong, but didn’t bring the expected stellar ratings expected by those familiar with the hoopla surrounding the Jonas Brothers and the likes of “Hannah Montana’s” Miley Cyrus.
“Jonas,” which premiered from 8-3:30 p.m. on May 2, was TV’s No. 1 program for the night among the small fry (kids 6-11, 1.6 million), tweens (kids 9-14, 1.6 million) and girl demos, and earned Disney Channel its best ratings in the half hour in the past eight months with 4 million total viewers.
And while it fared well (especially in girl demos) opposite its direct competition, “Fairly OddParents: Wishology, Part 2” on Nickelodeon, when compared to the April 19 original outing of “Hannah Montana” (2.1 million among tweens) and the Nickelodeon competitor’s “iCarly” original episodes from April (averaging 1.8 million among tweens), “Jonas” comes up a tad short.
The “Hannah Montana” April 19 episode also surpassed “Jonas” among the kids 6-11 demo (2.0 million).
But hey, just because Miley Cyrus and Miranda Cosgrove kicked their butts, doesn’t mean the Jonas Brothers are doing badly. They’re pretty solid. Overall, “Jonas” is certainly competitive, holding its own against so-called “robust counter programming” and improving upon year-ago time period averages, more than doubling total viewers and kids 6-11 and more than tripling the network’s tween viewers.
