Perez Hilton, you can't mess with the King of Pop … even after death.
The gossip blogger's usual ill-spirited remarks struck a nerve with Michael Jackson fans, causing around 800,000 of them to stop following Hilton's Twitter account, MediaBistro first reported Friday.
Hilton, born Mario Lavadeira, posted the following photo and comments to his blog on Thursday, June 25, the day Jackson fell ill and within the space of a few hours was declared dead:
Hilton's snarky comments, insinuating that the King of Pop was faking his ailment, was too much for Jackson fans, especially after losing him moments later. The post, which has since been deleted, caused Hilton's more than 1.8 million followers Thursday to dwindle down to 1.1 million as of Tuesday night — or so claim reports.
Twitter followers were alerted to Hilton's transgression and encouraged to stop following him by posting the hash tag #unfollowperez to their tweets. Although it seems that the Perez un-bandwagon has lost steam, a few stray tweets Monday night still declared, "THE #UNFOLLOWPEREZ MOVEMENT COST THE JERK 800,000 TWITTER FOLLOWERS GOOD JOB GUYS…"
UPDATE: According to Twittercounter.com, however, it appears that Hilton was never at 1.8 million followers in the past week and in fact, more people started following him at that point. The number of followers on the tracking site, however, differs from the number of followers on Hilton's Twitter page itself, so take that as you will.
Hilton's gossip blog revels in its controversial status and even states, "Welcome to PerezHilton.com – Hollywood's Most-Hated Web Site!"
He was recently in the news for getting in a tussle with the Black Eyed Peas manager and later with the gay rights organization GLAAD over the use of a gay slur.
