Though ABC has not yet confirmed her casting, sources tell me "Cheers" alum Shelley Long (Diane Chambers) has just signed on to portray Ed O'Neill's ex wife in the single-camera sitcom, "Modern Family."
The series, a mockumentary of sorts following three suburban couples — one traditional, one gay, one multi-ethnic second marriage — is set to premiere this fall on ABC.
And, by the way, it's legitimately funny.
O'Neill plays the husband in the multi-ethnic second marriage, with Sofia Vergara as his much-younger, Latina wife.
Adding Long — as a 60-something, super white first wife — to that dynamic?
We've got high hopes for this "Modern Family" business.
UPDATE 12:05 P.M.: ABC has confirmed Shelley Long's casting. She is set to appear in one episode so far.
