After Chris Daughtry was booted from “American Idol” in 2006, Ellen DeGeneres had him as a guest on her talk show and called him “my American Idol.” He’s since appeared on “Ellen” four more times.
So it’s not much of a surprise that Daughtry thinks DeGeneres will do a bang-up job as the newest “Idol” judge come January.
“Ellen’s a quick, witty person,” Daughtry tells OK! magazine. “I think she’ll handle herself very well.”
The fact that DeGeneres isn’t a music pro could actually be a good thing for the show, he adds: “Her opinion as far as a fan of music will be very valid, and it will be very reflective of the general public’s opinion, because she’s coming at it from a fan of music standpoint, not as a professional musician. I think it’s going to be a great fit.”
“American Idol” will be back in January, but because DeGeneres wasn’t hired until September, she’ll be absent from the audition rounds that kick off the season. Her first appearance as an “Idol” judge will probably come sometime in February.
