‘Twilight: New Moon’s’ gross of $140.7 million puts it at third all-time for an opening weekend. It pulled in $258.8 worldwide, according to studio estimates.
Only “The Dark Knight” ($158.4 million) and “Spider-Man 3” ($151.1 million) have had bigger opening weekends than “Twilight: New Moon.” Interestingly, “New Moon” bested “The Dark Knight’s” opening day by $5 million but slowed down that torrid pace the rest of the weekend.
Either way, it’s still a huge haul for the Summit Entertainment flick. The take for “New Moon’s” opening weekend was projected to be right around $100 million, which the film was fast-approaching after its first day. “New Moon” is also well on its way to passing the TOTAL gross of its predecessor “Twilight,” at $193 million.
The Sandra Bullock-Tim McGraw football movie “The Blind Side” was second at the box office this weekend, pulling in $34.5 million. We’ve heard pretty good things about it. With how thin the field is for Best Actress nominees this year, could we get to March and have to start calling her “Oscar-winner Sandra Bullock?” Keanu Reeves has his fingers crossed.
Finally, “2012,” which opened last weekend, finished third at the box office with $26.5 million. Its total is now at $108.2 million domestically. If you haven’t seen it yet, “SNL” did a great “2012” trailer spoof Saturday night.
