Shaun White emerged a champ, but it’s his rather spectacular trick gone wrong that’s creating buzz.
The snowboarder took home the superpipe gold medal at the Winter X Games on Friday (Jan. 29), but he almost didn’t make it after he had missed landing the Double McTwist 1260, smacking his face against the halfpipe during a practice run earlier in the evening.
In the video you can see his neck snap back and his helmet fly off his head.
The Double McTwist 1260 is no simple feat: After launching himself 15-20 feet in the air above the halfpipe, White executes two flips and three-and-a-half rotations before landing. That last part, the landing, is kind of important.
Check out the wreck:
White, aka “The Flying Tomato,” was obviously shaken, and an abrasion could be seen on his left cheek, but he went right back out and finished in first place. We hope he gets checked out by a doctor and gets plenty of rest.
After all, the Olympics are only a couple weeks away, airing on NBC from Feb. 12-28.
Good luck, Shaun!
