If you’re a spoiler-phobe and, therefore, not interested in knowing if Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) are about to hit the skids, click elsewhere because Korbi TV has just returned from the Warner Bros. set of “The Big Bang Theory” where we got the answer directly from the mouths of Mr. Galecki and Ms. Cuoco.
“Oh, [their relationship] must end at some point,” Cuoco shared. “And, yes, [there are] troubles ahead. Things are a little funky right now. I think Penny’s having more of a struggle at this point, I think she’s a little unsure of what she wants and I think the minute she loses Leonard, she’s going to regret it for a long time. It’s going to be tough… she’s starting to really realize that maybe [Leonard] is the one. But not right now. I think she has her own baggage [to deal with]. I think she has more baggage than the guys do.”
Galecki, who has previously said that the possibility of a Leonard-Penny romance is what originally piqued his interest in “BBT,” has enjoyed having the relationship come to fruition this season, however now seems ready to move on. “It’s been great,” he said. “But I think they’re still very far from being able to truly click. They’re too different and both have so much to learn. I mean, she has more relationship experience than he does, but I don’t think [her] relationships have been that significant or profound. And he has very little experience at all, so I think they both have a long way to go before they can meet on equal territory. But it will be fun to explore that. I think [their relationship] will come and go. They’ll stray and rekindle with newfound lessons and newfound confidence. I hope so, anyway.”
But how will the impending Leonard-Penny breakup affect the rest of the boys now that — as Kunal Nayyar (Koothrappali) pointed out — Penny has become an important part of their crew as a whole?
Cuoco admitted that both she and the writers are a little worried about the group dynamic with Penny post-breakup. Especially where Sheldon (Jim Parsons) is concerned: “What’s so funny is that Penny’s really become a mother to Sheldon. We have an episode coming up that [Leonard and Penny] are fighting in and it’s kind of like, who has custody of Sheldon?! His character is like a child and it’s funny how much a part of each other’s lives they’ve become. As much as he drives her crazy, she does everything for him. So, yeah, [the writers are] going to have to find a way to get that back… I think our break up might be a lot harder on Sheldon than we all think because he’s finally come to grips with things the way that they are. And I don’t think [he will take it hard] because he’s sad for us. It’s about him, how he’s affected. He’s not going to be able to cope. It’s going to take awhile. Sheldon’s going to lose his mind.”
As for those of you who think a Penny-Sheldon romance is in the cards, Cuoco said it’s not. “I think [people] love [the idea] because it’s so not realistic. It’s like another planet. It’s not going to happen, so they want it to happen. And [if it did happen], they wouldn’t want it anymore. Worlds would collide. I always imagined [we might see it] in a nightmare sequence, but nothing more than that.”
Still, there are many nice Penny-Sheldon moments to look forward to. As Cuoco explained, Sheldon doesn’t drive so she has to drive him places, take him shopping, cook him dinner sometimes and even sing him “Soft Kitty.” “There are a lot of strange things going on there,” Cuoco laughed. “It’s all very weird.”
