The “Captain America” movie hasn’t found its hero just yet, but it’s closing in on the man to play the villain.
“The Matrix” bad guy Hugo Weaving is in talks to play Cap’s nemesis, Red Skull, in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” the Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog reports. The deal isn’t done yet, however, and is in a “delicate stage” for the next couple of days.
If the deal does go through, Weaving will reunite with “The Wolfman” director Joe Johnston, who’s also helming “Captain America.”
Weaving is not a bad guy to have in your franchise film: In addition to “The Matrix” trilogy, where he played Agent Smith, he played Elf king Elrond in “The Lord of the Rings” and provided the voice of Megatron in the two “Transformers” movies.
His other credits include “V for Vendetta,” “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” and voice work on “Babe.”
“Captain America” has tested several actors for the lead role of Steve Rogers, including John Krasinski (“The Office”), Mike Vogel (“Cloverfield”) and Garret Hedlund (“Tron Legacy”). Reports this week have said “Fantastic Four” star Chris Evans may also be a contender.
