Saint Patrick probably was not into drinking green beer, asking strangers to kiss him and general carousing. Boo.
Instead, Patrick was a Christian missionary who lived during the 4th and possibly 5th centuries and is generally accepted as the patron saint of Ireland.
The holiday that falls on March 17 named for the saint was originally religious in nature, but has devolved into the lovely, secular celebration of all things Irish.
