She’s also pysched about her new critically hailed independent dark comedy, “Paper Man,” now in theatres, starring Jeff Daniels, Emma Stone, Kieran Culkin and Ryan Reynolds.
She plays Daniels’ busy surgeon wife. He’s a stalled writer with — naturally — writers block who has a secret superhero imaginary friend, played by “Green Lantern” star Reynolds, clad in a goofy red and blue superhero costume with squeaky red rubber boots.
“I’m always impressed by people who are inconvenienced by wardrobe and not complaining,” says Kudrow, of Ryan’s skin-tight Captain Excellent costume. “But that must have been hot or freezing … in the winter in Montauk, New York.” As for the dark comedy, she says one of the draws was getting to work with fellow indie regular Daniels.
“I just like how complicated is … you know, that’s how marriage is, for better or worse and when it becomes more than one of them can bear, there’s an explosion.” As for young actress Emma Stone’s (“Superbad,” Zombieland,” “The House Bunny”) role as a depressed teen who befriends Daniels’ neurotic character, Lisa explains, “It’s a platonic relationship but that’s part of the tension of the movie. You’re watching it the whole time, going ‘You’re not gonna kiss her, are you?'” Lisa and Emma will next be paired up in another comedy, “Easy A.” Here’s the first trailer, which doesn’t reveal the plot (an unpopular girl uses a rumor about her lost virginity to advance her social standing), but it’s pretty cute.
“Easy A” — due out next fall — also stars Amanda Bynes, “Gossip Girl” star Penn Badgley, Stanley Tucci, Cam Gigandet, Patricia Clarkson and Malcolm McDowell, which is a pretty impressive cast.
