Fresh off of his split from Kate Winslet (and from James Bond), Sam Mendes has attached himself to another classic franchise, “The Wizard of Oz.” He’s eying Robert Downey Jr. to play the famed Wizard himself, as reported by Cinematical.
Mendes’ version is titled “Oz the Great and Powerful,” and explores Oz’s life before he was a wizard, back when he was just a circus performer from Omaha, named Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkel Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs (or O.Z.P.I.N.H.E.A.D.).
“Oz the Great and Powerful,” backed by Disney, isn’t the only movie in the works that’s based on Frank L. Baum’s series of books. New Line is developing an adaptation of the original called “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” Warner Bros’ “Oz” is about Dorothy’s granddaughter being sent to Oz to fight evil, and is expected to have a graphic novel feel to it.
