“Iron Man 2” is on its way to a big opening weekend, but will it break records.
The Marvel Studio sequel earned an estimated $52.4 million at the domestic box office on its opening day Friday (May 7), says The Hollywood Reporter.
This doesn’t appear to be enough to give it a record-breaking weekend, however.
“Iron Man 2” is on track to earn about $130 million for the weekend, which is far shy of the $158.4 million that “The Dark Knight” opened with in July 2008. Worldwide, it’s earned about $200 million. The film cost about $170 million to produce.
In the sequel to 2008’s “Iron Man,” we see billionaire Tony Stark faced with two villains: Whiplash (Mickey Rourke) and Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell). He’s also distracted by new assistant Natalie Rushman (Scarlett Johansson) and must contend with a secret he’s keeping from the faithful Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow).
