Saturday marks the first official day of recognition for Harvey Milk in California after the bill was passed in 2009. Milk would have turned 80 on Saturday. He was assassinated in his office in San Francisco City Hall on Nov. 27, 1978 at age 48.

]]>In his short life, he fought against brutality and discrimination against gay San Francisco citizens and the right of openly gay teachers in the classroom. He’s credited with helping to establish the gay-friendly business district of the area called Castro in San Francisco. He was also the first openly gay man to serve public office in California when he served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977 until his death. His life and work inspired the film, “Harvey Milk,” starring Sean Penn, James Brolin and James Franco. Sharon and Kelly Osbourne are also serving as the Grand Marshals for the Los Angeles Pride parade on June 13. Will you be celebrating Harvey Milk Day with the Osbournes?
