“Wanted” star James McAvoy is moving to another superhuman-powered comic book franchise.
The Scotsman has been cast as young Professor X in Matthew Vaughn’s “X-Men: First Class” at Fox, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The prequel rewinds back to when rivals Prof X and Magneto were still friends, Charles Xavier and Eric Lensherr, respectively. As they discovered their mutant powers, they had different views on mutant-human relations, which soon led them to become archenemies leading the opposing forces of the X-Men and the Brotherhood.
It’s not certain if McAvoy will be playing the young version of Prof X with a full head of hair or if he’ll have to shave to play the traditionally bald and wheelchair-bound telepath.
In the Bryan Singer-directed “X-Men” films, Prof X was portrayed by Patrick Stewart.
Production on “X-Men: First Class” is scheduled to begin in London this summer. The release date thus far is June 3, 2011.
