The parents of teenage sailor Abby Sunderland say that while they were approached by a reality-show producer, they scrapped the idea not long after their daughter began her voyage.
Producer Magnetic Entertainment did make a deal with the family to produce a show about them, but Abby’s father, Laurence, tells the Los Angeles Times that the deal fell apart shortly after Abby began her solo around-the-world trip in January.
Sunderland says he wanted to do a show about “inspiring kids doing inspirational things” — their son Zac has also sailed around the globe — but after Magnetic couldn’t sell that idea, the company wanted to focus on the potential danger of Abby’s trip.
“They were assuming Abigail was going to die out there,” he says.
The family has regained the rights to their own story and doesn’t plan to shop it around again.
