Though there’s no word yet on whether he’ll be returning to “Glee” next season, don’t expect Broadway vet Jonathan Groff to stop singing any time soon. In fact, Lea Michele‘s BFF performed for fans on June 20th at Joe’s Pub in New York City.
Groff was accompanied by musicians Jonathan Haffiner, Craig Taborn, Eivind Opsvik, Ben Perowsky and Kenny
Wollesen. Showing off that Broadway stamina, he performed two shows – one at 7 p.m. and another at 9:30 p.m.
“One of the best and the worst things about living in Los Angeles is the traffic,” Groff told fans. “So basically all the songs that you’re going to hear tonight are songs that I’ve sung with the windows down screaming at the top of my lungs in my car throughout Los Angeles.”
Fans got to hear Jonathan perform “You Don’t Know My Name,” by Alicia Keys, plus a jazzy version of “Here I Go Again” by Whitesnake. Though he didn’t perform “Bohemian Rhapsody,” — or any of Jesse St. James’ songs from “Glee” — he did give us another taste of Queen with “Don’t Stop Me Now.”
Groff and Michele first worked together in the Broadway play “Spring Awakening.” The show has since closed, but Groff offered up a special treat for fans. He performed “Mama Who Bore Me,” which was actually sung by Lea’s character in the show.
He took some time out from the show to acknowledge the holiday as well. “Happy Father’s Day,” he said. “I wanted – if the whole room wouldn’t mind – to applaud for my dad.”
Groff even shared a heart-warming family story. “My dad trains and races horses for a living,” he explained. “And the night the finale of ‘Glee’ aired he was racing horses. He’d called me earlier in the day and he was like, ‘Jonathan, what time do you think ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is going to air in the episode?’ And I was like ‘I don’t know… between 9:20 and 9:40.’ So my dad went into the men’s locker room at the horse place and turned off baseball or whatever they were watching and was like ‘I gotta turn on ‘Glee’!'” Unfortunately, his dad missed Jonathan’s performance anyway. “But it’s okay, because we watched it on the DVR today like three times.”
