The Dish Rag can’t count how many times we’ve listened to “The Golden Girls” theme song, “Thank You for Being a Friend.”
But it took the Thursday (June 3) sad death of Rue McClanahan (aka Blanche Devereaux) — whose voice you hear in beginning of the video above talking about the original script for “Golden Girls” — for us to find out that the catchy tune was actually written by Andrew Gold (seen in the video below) for his third album, “All This and Heaven Too.”]]> As a single, the song reached No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978. Who knew? The song was later revived for “Golden Girls” in a version recorded by Cynthia Fee. “Being a Friend” was also heard in “The Simpsons” episode “Double, Double, Boy in Trouble” at Lenny’s dinner party. Most recently, past and present cast members of Saturday Night Live sang the song during an episode hosted by Betty White on May 8. At the end, Betty slipped on a ski mask and performed a death metal version of the song. Thanks, but we still prefer the original.
