“Life on Mars” star Jason O’Mara is getting on board with another time-traveling project, FOX’s midseason series “Terra Nova.”
O’Mara has taken the lead role in the sci-fi project, playing a man who takes his family back in time to prehistoric Earth in hopes of helping save the planet from becoming a wasteland in the future. His casting had been in the works for a couple of weeks, according to Deadline Hollywood. “Friday Night Lights” star Kyle Chandler had been rumored to be up for the role as well, but the show decided to go with O’Mara.
“Terra Nova” will be an effects-heavy drama in which a group of people from the mid-22nd century — including O’Mara’s character and his family — travel back in time to prehistoric times to try to put humankind on a better path toward the future. Brannon Braga (“24,” “Star Trek: Enterprise”) and David Fury (“24,” “Angel”) are executive producing with Steven Spielberg.
O’Mara is the first actor cast in the show, which was ordered directly to series to give its creators time to build the digital world the characters will inhabit. A premiere date hasn’t been set, but it probably won’t get on the air before next spring.
In addition to “Life on Mars,” O’Mara also starred in ABC’s crime drama “The Evidence” a few seasons back. His credits also include “The Agency,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Men in Trees.”
