With Aziz Ansari hosting and the likes of Will Ferrell, Jason Segel, Adam Sandler, Betty White, Sandra Bullock and Russell Brand in attendance, who would’ve thought Tom Cruise would be the comedy star of the MTV Movie Awards?
But you can make a strong case for Cruise, who reprised his “Tropic Thunder” character, the f-bomb-dropping, money-grubbing movie producer Les Grossman, in several pre-taped bits — and even appeared live for a dance number with Jennifer Lopez after booting “The Hangover’s” Ed Helms off the stage.
Cruise wasn’t doing the character just out of the goodness of his heart — he does have a movie to promote. His latest, “Knight and Day,” opens in three weeks, and he and co-star Cameron Diaz appeared together to present the best movie award (to “Twilight: New Moon”). But in taking on the hilariously awful Grossman again, Cruise showed a willingness to make fun of himself that we haven’t seen for a while.
Here’s our favorite piece, in which Grossman envisions a buddy-cop flick for “Twilight” stars Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner and takes on “Karate Kid” Jaden Smith.
