UPDATE: Scribe David Graziano (“In Plain Sight”) will also be running the show with Alexander Cary. Graziano joined “Lie to Me” in January at the request of then-showrunner Shawn Ryan immediately after sealing a deal with 20th Century Fox TV. Prior to “Lie to Me,” Graziano was a Co-Executive Producer on “Southland.” This will be somewhat of a reunion for Graziano and Cary, as they first crossed paths on “In Plain Sight” at USA two seasons ago.
Original story below:
Last month’s announcement that showrunner Shawn Ryan was leaving FOX’s on-the-bubble ratings-struggler “Lie to Me” had many wondering about the fate of the show.
But despite Ryan’s exit and declining ratings, FOX picked up “Lie to Me” for a third season. Now we learn from the show’s star Tim Roth that a new showrunner has been tapped.
Roth tells Zap2it that Alexander Cary, a British writer who Ryan brought onboard during Season 2, will be “Lie to Me’s” showrunner for next season.
“This writer, Alexander Cary, he is a really very, very good writer…. So that’s what Shawn did for us in a way is make sure that we were set, and then he moved on.”
When asked how he feels about Ryan leaving to concentrate on FOX’s midseason cop show “Ride-Along” and the FX comedy/drama series “Terriers,” Roth responds optimistically.
“I feel good about it. What he did was he brought on a group of writers,” says Roth. “For him to come on and do someone else’s show — it’s not something that he’s created — that’s a very different thing for him to do. But it’s good though, he did it. And what he did is he brought on a group of writers that were very interesting to me. You know, could write in different ways, and we were still trying to find our feet in the second season.”
Cary has served as a writer and story editor on “Lie to Me” since 2009, and even wrote what Roth tells us is his favorite episode yet — the one where fellow English actor Lennie James involves Cal Lightman (Roth’s character) in a criminal conspiracy.
“Lie to Me” returns from its hiatus on Monday, June 7 when Season 2’s remaining episodes will air throughout the summer. Shooting for Season 3 will start in July.
