James Callis will look sharp when he joins the cast of “Eureka” this season, but he’ll sound a little different.
“I’ve got well-cut suits,” he says, “but they haven’t given me the British accent.”
You win some, you lose some.
The Syfy show’s Season 4 premiere Friday (July 9) will feature the first appearance by Callis — best known as Dr. Gaius Baltar (with the British accent) on “Battlestar Galactica” — as the enigmatic Dr. Grant, a physicist and former Eureka resident whose departure from and return to town are both shrouded in mystery.
His arrival also causes trouble for Sheriff Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson), since it upsets Carter’s off-and-on relationship with Dr. Allison Blake (Salli Richardson-Whitfield).
“That’s right,” says Callis. “Although, what is kind of funny, she catches my eye rather than the other way around.”
Grant’s appearance also coincides with changes for the entire town.
“Imagine a reset button,” says Callis, “that you don’t press but you kind of twist round. ‘OK, you thought you were like this, but you’re not.’ Everything is up in the air. It’s a bit like classical writing, where the end of the story is exactly like the beginning of the story, but it’s slightly different.
“It’s like the guy in a rags-to-riches story. At the beginning, he’s sitting on a box in the street; and at the end of the story, he’s sitting on a box in the street, but he’s a millionaire. It’s a bit of a head-frak.”
“Eureka” premieres at 9 p.m. ET Friday on Syfy, leading into the new Syfy series “Haven,” about a town that serves as a refuge for supernaturally-afflicted people.
