Brendan Robinson is pining away for Hanna (Ashley Benson) as Nerd Hottie Lucas — but he first read for a non-romantic role with another “Pretty Little Liar.”
“I originally auditioned for Mike Montgomery, back in the beginning of March,” but he was told that he was too old to play Aria’s younger brother. He was invited back a couple weeks later to read for Lucas and the rest is history.
And Lucas is absolutely the right character for Brendan. Given the opportunity to play someone else on the show, Brendan says, “I would chose just to be Lucas. Honestly, it’s one of those things where I think the right part came around at the right time … I’m really thankful that I had the opportunity to embody him and bring him to life.”
“There’s a lot of Lucas that is in me,” he continues. “I think probably 75% of Lucas is straight-up Brendan and the other aspects are things that I’ve added to the mix … I was definitely not popular in high school at all.”
The nerdy aspect of Lucas is what makes him such an endearing character. “One of the things [fans have] said is how they appreciate that Lucas is probably the most real person in Rosewood. Particularly in this last episode, when he was the first person to straight-up say that Alison was evil.”
So far, Lucas has been pining away for Hanna, who is Sean’s girlfriend, but the rivalry does not extend off-camera. Lucas tells us that Chuck Hittinger, who plays Sean, is one of his closest friends.
“I’ve actually become really close with Chuck Hittinger … there’s also a girl named Michelle who stands in for Ashley Benson when we do lighting for scenes … We actually all went to Disneyland last Wednesday. But everybody’s been great, everybody’s very friendly. We all get along really well,” Brendan says.
He also wants his fans to know to follow him on Twitter at @brendanrobinson. He even joked about how much the show has increased his followers. “The day before the Homecoming episode, Lucy Hale tweeted to go follow @brendanrobinson and literally within 48 hours, at least 1000 people started following me,” he laughs. “I’m more than willing to answer people’s questions and I like to do shout-outs. I’ve been trying to do fan shout-outs.”
Look for Part Two of our Brendan interview next week — he dishes on
