law and order los angeles prop 8 'Law & Order: Los Angeles' tackles Proposition 8 in early episode

Now that its sizable cast has fallen into place, producers at “Law & Order: Los Angeles” are turning the conversation to the different kinds of stories they plan to tell in the latest iteration of the legal franchise.

Executive producer Rene Balcer tells AfterElton.com that an early episode of of the series will examine California’s recently overturned Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage in the state for nearly two years. “One of the episodes that we’re doing is [about] the money behind the Prop. 8
people and the hypocrisy of black churches supporting a Proposition like
that,” says Balcer, “and also looking at the whole ‘initiative industry’ and how these
lobbyists make a lot of money.”

Balcer goes on to say that exposing different hypocrisies is one of the series’ goals, and the LA-centric example was a natural subject to tackle. “[We] were sitting around talking about it and thought, ‘Okay, we got the
first six stories. What’s the next seven?’ And then this came out.”

“Law & Order: LA” premieres Wednesday, Sept 29, at 10 p.m. ET.
