Jimena Navarrete of Mexico is the 2010 Miss Universe.
She won the title Monday night (Aug. 23) during NBC’s live broadcast of the pageant in Las Vegas. Miss Jamaica Yendi Philipps was the first runner-up; Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell, Miss Ukraine Anna Poslavska and Miss Philippines Venus Raj — who was the online favorite — rounded out the top five.
Navarrete takes over as Miss Universe from Stefania Fernandez, who won last year’s pageant representing Venezuela.
Navrrete had the second-highest score among the top 15 (behind Philipps) in the swimsuit portion of the competition and was the top scorer after the evening-gown portion.
All five finalists handled their interview question pretty well. Judge Evan Lysacek asked Navarrete about the effect of unsupervised Internet use on young people. She answered that while the Internet is an “indispensable tool,” adults should be watchful about what their kids are seeing online.
Campbell was given the Miss Congeniality award by her fellow contestants, while Miss Thailand Fonthip Watcharatrakul won both Miss Photogenic and the favorite national costume award.
“Today” co-host Natalie Morales and “Celebrity Apprentice” winner Bret Michaels hosted the broadcast.
