The topics might not have been too hot, but “The View’s” Sept. 7 season premiere wasn’t without its share of fanfare. In addition to being the first new episode in a month, it marked Barbara Walters’ official return since leaving the show to undergo heart surgery in May. And where talk show hosts return from medical absences, David Letterman is sure to follow.

]]>Regis Philbin‘s 2007 heart surgery, offered the same support to Walters by making his first ever appearance on “The View.” And while he did stick to the episode’s uncharacteristically benign topics, dishing on all things cardiac recovery with Walters, he did make a special point to mock late-night nemesis Jay Leno. (His impersonation, by the way, is dead-on). But does his mockery of Leno mean he’s Team Coco? Not so much. Letterman admits he’ll check out Conan O’Brien‘s upcoming TBS show, but doesn’t really plan on watching. After Letterman left the stage, Walters’ co-hosts announced a surprise, which ended up being comedian Mario Cantone singing a revised version of “Hello Dolly” with a troupe of tuxedo-ed male dancers. In his masculine amalgam of Liza Minnelli and Carol Channing, Catone sang “Hello Barbara” while everyone smiled and clapped. All in all, very un-“View.” Hopefully tomorrow we can ditch the schmaltz and start fighting again.
