The “Spider-Man” reboot has cast Rhys Ifans as a villain. We just don’t know which one.
Sony Pictures, which is making the new “Spider-Man,” announced the casting of Ifans (“Notting Hill”) on Monday (Oct. 11), but the studio’s press release says that “the filmmakers prefer to not reveal which character Ifans will be playing.” Good luck keeping that a secret for the next 21 months.
The only potential clue as to the character’s identity comes from a statement by director Marc Webb: “What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker [Andrew Garfield]. Rhys’ incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character,” Webb says.

Venom and Lizard have both been among the rumored baddies for Spidey to battle in the new movie, as has the Green Goblin. We’ll know for sure who Ifans is playing when “Spider-Man” hits theaters in July 2012 — if not well before then.
In addition to “Notting Hill,” Ifans’ credits include “Little Nicky,” “The Shipping News” and “Hannibal Rising”; he also appears in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” which arrives in theaters later this year.
What do you think of the casting? Which villain should Ifans play?
