While the “Hellcats” cast and crew celebrates their full-season pickup, the Lancer Hellcats are also partying… ’80s style. Zap2it was on the scene at the Vancouver set while they shot their Nov. 3 episode, “Back of a Car.” While the cheerleaders celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Hellcats with legwarmers and The GoGos, the entire crew got into the spirit. Everyone in the production office wore their finest Boy Toy belts and leotards, too!
If you haven’t been seduced by “Hellcats” yet, tonight’s the night to tune in. We’re gonna have to face it, we’re addicted to this show.
We don’t want to give away too much of the episode, we will say that it’s our favorite so far. In fact, “Hellcats” has generally exceeded all of our expectations this season. It consistently delivers an hour of fun performances, beautiful people, and genuine emotion. When teen angst is splashed all over television, it’s nice to see our twenty-something angst get its day in the sun as well.
So what can we expect from tonight’s episode, “Back of a Car”? Get ready for ’80s nostalgia that hits all the right notes — even if your ’80s experience mostly involved diapers and putting blocks in your mouth. There are a few surprise musical performances by the very talented Vanessa (Sharon Leal), plus Alice gains a few Awesome Points when she puts her foot down and refuses to be Jake’s arm candy.
Meanwhile, Marti (Aly Michalka), Savannah (Ashley Tisdale), Dan (Matt Barr) and Lewis (Robbie Jones) go ’80s crazy in the Lancer theater department’s costume wing. We love Dan and Lewis’s dead-on impressions of Crockett & Tubbs, and it’s nice to see Savannah cut loose… especially considering she’s been more uptight than usual lately.
What’s got her so wound up? Sex, of course… or, her lack thereof. When Dan and Lewis have to crash in Marti and Savannah’s room, the differences in the two relationships are highlighted when Lewis gets comfortable in Marti’s bed… and Dan takes the floor.
“Since Marti and Savannah share a room, inevitably, we find ourselves kind of bunking up in a slumber party,” Barr told us when we visited the set.
As Savannah stresses about her virginity – which she wants to lose in the most romantic way possible, of course – it becomes the elephant in an already crowded room. “Marti’s personality is so liberal and free spirited that she and Lewis jump right in bed, and Savannah’s still taking baby steps toward living in the moment, per se,” says Barr. “She’s getting a lot of ridicule for being a goody-two-shoes, and Dan’s kind of caught in the middle of wanting to support her, but also, he’s a guy, he’s 21, and I think he wants to bunk up too.”
Seeing Dan with her roommate causes some unexpected feelings for Marti. “Marti wants to protect Savannah and doesn’t want her to know about the past that she’s had with Dan, and the fact that there is feelings there,” says Michalka.
“I think [the feelings] kind of sneak up on Marti. I don’t think she’s necessarily aware that they’re so front and center, because she’s not only busy with the squad but she’s also distracted by Lewis. It kind of comes out of left field for her when she’s like oh, wait a minute, Dan’s my best friend, we’ve kind of gone there before, and now, what should I do about this situation where he’s dating my best friend? It starts to get a little bit messy. “
By the end of ’80s night, Marti and Savannah’s friendship will be threatened in a big way. “There’s a little bit of a flirtation there between Dan and Marti and they have a history, so for Marti and Savannah it’s going to be up and down. They’re close, but there are going to be things that kind of make them frenemies in a way,” Tisdale says. “But they’re roommates, so they just have to deal with it.”
We laughed, we cried, we wished we hadn’t thrown out all of our neon green hair scrunchies. Don’t miss “Back of a Car” tonight at 9 p.m. on The CW.
