It’s hard to believe that merely a year ago we had no idea what a Snooki was and how important it is to make the right impression with the guidos. We have MTV’s “Jersey Shore” to thank for many things, but high on the list is for introducing the world to Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino. And should we forget, he’s right there to remind us.
After all, this is the man who snagged a pair of Star Candy panties from the official American Music Awards gift lounge reading “You’re So Lucky” in rhinestones across the back because, “Any girl would be so lucky [to be with me].” Wonder who on his gift list is going to find those stuffed in their Christmas stocking.
Sorrentino has become such a media savvy phenom (was there a red carpet where he didn’t pull up his shirt so we could all check out his “Situation” for ourselves in the past 12 months?), GQ magazine really had no choice but to name him their “Sensation of the Year” for 2010. The fact that he’s managed to turning GTL — Gym, Tan, Laundry — into $5 million worth of endorsements and a turn on the “Dancing With the Stars” floor is not to be dismissed.
His previous dance experience was limited to grinding in the clubs and working as a shirtless waiter in a strip joint although he didn’t strip himself, except for that one time while wearing “like, a red-white-and-blue thong and maybe, like, an Uncle Sam hat.” But his aspirations were always to do something more, bigger, with his life.
“I didn’t mind the attention from pretty girls. But then if I got attention from unattractive girls, it just felt kind of cheap.”
