[UPDATE Nov. 17 8:47 a.m. ET: Ryan Reynolds IS this year’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ covering the 25th anniversary edition of the magazine.]
People Magazine reveals their pick for 2010’s Sexiest Man Alive on Wednesday (Nov. 17). This decision is always a pretty big deal, but this year it’s even bigger. The magazine celebrates the 25th anniversary of the title so we know a lot of thought will be going into picking which A-lister’s defined jawline will grace the milestone cover.
The Zap2it staff decided to have some fun and each select a front-runner and make this life-altering choice public, so that way when one of us wins, it is public knowledge that they are awesome…at least until next year.
James Franco has had quite the eclectic year. He’s done two stints on ABC’s soap “General Hospital” as “Franco,” a madman who considers murder to be an acceptable multimedia art form. He played himself on “30 Rock” and directed a documentary about what it takes to produce an episode of “Saturday Night Live.” He wrote a couple short stories that got published in Esquire and McSweeney’s, and appeared on the cover of Candy magazine in drag. And he didn’t completely forget his day job, playing poet Allen Ginsberg in “Howl” and having the distinction of cutting off his arm in the most-talked about movie scene of the year in “127 Hours.” Oh, and he’s hot. If he’s handy around the house, we’d be more than happy to have him move in tomorrow.
What’s left to do other than be named the Sexiest Man Alive? Actually, winning the title would probably be the most predictable about him this year.
Simply put: Chris Pine is gorgeous. I can’t even decide which is sexier, his clean cut all-American look, or his rugged and unshaven tough guy look. Either way, those baby blue eyes never fail to make me weak in the knees. I am the last person in the world who would get excited about the release of Star Trek, but let me tell you… I can’t think of anyone else who could get me so amped up about Captain Kirk. Chris is the perfect mix of manly strength with boyish good looks and charm. A lethal combination, but I am definitely not complaining.
Not only is Jon Hamm the devastatingly handsome Don Draper on “Mad Men,” but he has shown he has a wicked sense of humor in his stints on “30 Rock” and “Saturday Night Live.” There is nothing better than a man who can go from heartbreaking to humor. And on a personal note, I also adore that he is a huge St. Louis Cardinals fan. Now our fanbase can claim a celebrity fan other than Billy Bob Thornton.
If George Clooney is going to pass his torch to anyone, it should be Pacey. Er… Joshua Jackson. And not just because they totally look alike! Jackson is charming on screen and off, and he’s perfectly content to let the spotlight shine on his uber-hot girlfriend, Diane Kruger. What’s sexier than a man who doesn’t mind being the arm-candy once in a while? Jackson has been steaming up TV screens in every other episode of “Fringe” this season now that his character, Peter, has taken his relationship with “Olivia” to a new level. And as for the weeks he doesn’t appear on the show… we love a guy who plays hard to get. Also… he was PACEY. Come on.
It’s about time People starts getting a little more creative with their “SMA” selection. Take last year’s choice, Johnny Depp. Now, I love Johnny (Embarrassing confession alert: I used to have a picture of him in my wallet in middle school), but it’s such an obvious choice and he had already won. So instead of being predictable and choosing a Pitt or a Clooney, I call for new blood and what better choice than Ryan Gosling? He’s a versatile actor, a talented musician, and let’s face it, the man is attractive (See: brooding stare directly above. Now imagine that staring at you at a checkout counter. You can’t not buy it). Also, there’s this video. The way he beckons her to come to him. The way he struts across the stage. The way he lifts her up and kisses her. Five years later and I’m still swooning. Now that’s sexy.
If I was dining in a caf in some foreign capital and a complete stranger invited me to go away for the weekend, I would blow my imaginary rape whistle. If that stranger happened to Javier Bardem, I’d sell a kidney for the necessary travel expenses. Bardem embodies the perfect combo of classically handsome features, dreamy accent, brooding intensity and a je ne sais quoi I’ll just have to call… creepiness. Yes, he’s a little scary. But therein lies the appeal. And considering he’s about to father the world’s most beautiful baby with wife Penlope Cruz, his stock will only continue to rise. Imagine how good he’s going to look with a Baby Bjorn strapped to that broad chest.
Honestly? I have no dog in this fight. The gentlemen my colleagues have chosen are all handsome chaps, but I never much considered what makes a guy sexy. So my choice, while maybe a bit obvious, is geared to the idea of what might move the most copies, and that would be George Clooney. He’s been named the sexiest man before (twice, actually) and since it’s the 25th anniversary of the honor, I’m betting they’ll give it to a familiar face. And, yeah — the guy has a life most of us would kill for, and that’s pretty sexy.
Okay, this is a longshot since I first knew him as a child star and understand that fans sometimes still see him more as “boy” than “man,” but Joseph Gordon-Levitt has really come into his own and shows a range that more seasoned actors would acknowledge. I already knew he could do dark and dramatic (“Brick,” “Mysterious Skin”) but his true leading man status was solidified by the charming and meaty role in “(500) Days of Summer.” That and his delightful guest hosting on “Saturday Night Live” demonstrates his musical chops. And in this summer’s “Inception,” he completely redefined what an action star is in my eyes. And how can you not love that grin? Joey is a thinking person’s sexy and he just seems to get better with every year.
