The Starz series has zeroed in on three actors to replace Whitfield in a possible second season of the show. He was forced to leave the show in September when the cancer he had been fighting since early this year returned.
Turner is probably the best-known name to American viewers; in addition to his time on “All My Children,” he also competed on “Dancing With the Stars” last spring (though he was eliminated early).
Amell has guested on “NCIS: Los Angeles,” “Flashpoint” and “CSI: Miami.” McIntyre appeared in one episode of HBO’s miniseries “The Pacific” and has a handful of credits in his native Australia. All three actors, for what it’s worth, are younger than the 36-year-old Whitfield — at 33 Turner is closest to Whitfield in age.
Starz is planning to air a six-episode prequel to “Spartacus” titled “Gods of the Arena” early next year; the timetable for Season 2 of the main series remains up in the air.
