Nothing you’re about to read is illegal or even necessarily untoward. But when you read “NFL star hooks up with high-school girl,” it does give you pause, right?
That’s the story from sports blog Deadspin, which reports that New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and a 17-year-old girl it identifies at “E.K.” have, as the site puts it, “hooked up.”
(The New York Post has identified the 17-year-old as the daughter of the wealthy head of a partner in an Connecticut investment firm. We’re going with Deadspin’s decision not to ID her by name.)
The tale began on New Year’s Eve, when E.K. and some friends had managed to make their way into a Manhattan nightclub. Sanchez was there too, and he talked to E.K., who gave him her number. She also said, according to Deadspin, “You know I’m 17, right?” The girl says Sanchez replied that he couldn’t see her until she was 18, to which she answered, “Actually, 17 is legal in New York.”
They continued texting for a while (E.K. at one point updated her Facebook status to read “MARK F***ING SANCHEZ JUST TEXTED ME!!!!!!!”) and eventually went out to dinner together. The girl also told Deadspin (“somewhat reluctantly”) that “we went back to his place in Jersey after dinner. He lives on a golf course. There was a big storm.” She also provided pictures of what she says is Sanchez’s bedroom.
The Jets and Sanchez haven’t commented on the story, and no one has done anything illegal (the age of consent in New York is 17; in New Jersey it’s 16). It’s just — how to put this — kind of gross.
