With Matt Damon out of the next Jason Bourne movie, the focus has turned to an actor to replace him.
Well, not “replace,” exactly. “The Bourne Legacy” will focus on a new character who’s been trained/programmed in a similar way to Jason Bourne. Variety reports that writer-director Tony Gilroy has met with Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire (because where one goes, so must the other), “Twilight’s” Kellan Lutz, Taylor Kitsch (“Friday Night Lights”) and Garrett Hedlund (“Tron: Legacy”) about playing the part.
None of the five has achieved front-runner status as of yet, and other actors could be added to the mix as well.
Based on the five choices above, we think Gilroy — who wrote the previous three “Bourne” movies and is also directing “The Bourne Legacy” — is on the right track. As Damon played him, Bourne began as a guy who seems quiet and unassuming but can kill you in a thousand different ways; Gyllenhaal, Maguire, Lutz, Kitsch and Hedlund could probably pull of something similar.
(Gilroy and Universal, which owns the franchise, are also pulling off a neat trick here: By focusing on a different character, Variety notes, the door is still open for Damon if he decides he wants to return later.)
