Get ready for another short, frenetic awards season early next year.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Tuesday (April 26) that the 84th Oscars will take place on Feb. 26, 2012. That will make two years in a row (and five of the last six) that the awards have aired on the last Sunday in February. ABC, as usual, will televise the Oscars.
It also means that we’re likely in for a compressed awards season. This year, only 42 days elapsed between the Golden Globes and the Oscars, with the SAG Awards, a slew of other guild awards and critics’ honors all falling in between (plus the Grammys in mid-February, for good measure). We can expect more of the same next year.
Per the academy, nomination ballots will be mailed on Dec. 27 and are due back on Jan. 13. Nominations will be announced on Jan. 24, and final ballots are due five days before the ceremony.
