“Fast Five” completely dominated the box office bringing in $83.6 million over the weekend. The number blew away the previous film in the franchise, which brought in $71 million its opening weekend. The franchises’ fifth film starring Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and Paul Walker is Universal’s best opening ever (“The Lost World: Jurassic Park” — $72.1 million).

The weekend’s other new releases — “Hoodwinked Too!” and “Prom” — didn’t fare so well, only bringing in $4.1 million and $5 million.

Last weekend’s box office champ “Rio” came in second, but still nowhere near “Fast Five,” earning $14.4M. “Madea’s Big Family” was third with $10 million. Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson’s romance/drama “Water For Elephants” made $9.1 million, bringing its total gross over the $30 million mark.
