Johnny Weir, Olympian and star of “Pop Star On Ice” and “Skating With the Stars,” will serve as Grand Marshal in the 2011 Los Angeles Gay Pride Parade. THR reports that Weir will oversee the famous parade, which will run through West Hollywood on Santa Monica Blvd. on June 12. He follows in the very famous footsteps of previous Grand Marshals Sharon and Kelly Osbourne, Chelsea Handler, Cyndi Lauper and Kathy Griffin.
The event, organized by Christopher Street West, is part of a weekend-long celebration of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender pride that draws crowds to Los Angeles from across the globe every year. The non-profit organization is named after the New York City site of the Stonewall rebellion. The parade, begun in 1970, has evolved into a full-on festival.
Rodney Scott, Christopher Street West board pres, tells the site, “Johnny lives a life with a defined purpose, is dedicated to helping
young people and is not afraid to be himself, sometimes not always an
easy thing for a world-class athlete.”
Weir adds, “I’m not ashamed to be me. More than anyone else I know, I love my life
and accept myself. What’s wrong with being unique? I am proud of
everything that I am and will become.”
