martin luther king jr getty Martin Luther King: Blame Osama bin Laden for fake MLK quote“I will mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy.”

If you belong to Facebook, Twitter or any other social networking site, chances are someone you know posted the quote above — attributed to Martin Luther King Jr. — on Monday (May 2) in reference to the celebration at the death of Osama Bin Laden.

There’s just one problem. Martin Luther King never said it.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, the quote was first posted to Facebook by Jessica Dovey, “a recent Penn State grad living in Kobe, Japan,” who used the words as a preamble to an actual King quote:

mlk dovey Martin Luther King: Blame Osama bin Laden for fake MLK quote
Dovey’s Facebook friends liked it and passed it along. At some point, the quote marks were dropped and — voila — one bogus, yet believable, MLK quote.

Thus far, the Christian Science Monitor and other news outlets have been unable to attribute the quote to anyone other than Dovey. So, Jessica Dovey of Kobe, Japan: well said.
