On Sunday night, 9/11 mastermind Osama Bin Laden‘s death was reported on Twitter before it reached the major news networked. The first reputable source of information for Bin Laden’s death was Keith Urbahn‘s twitter.
Urbahn, Chief of Staff for former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, tweeted “I’m told by a reputable person they have killed Osama Bin Laden” via Blackberry.
News spread rapidly over various social media networks, and Twitter and Facebook quickly became the place to be for people who wished to discuss the historic event. Celebrities, of course, made sure to make their opinions known. Some were solemn, some celebratory. Some took the opportunity to crack a joke or thank the troops.
Rob Lowe and “Friday Night Lights” star Minka Kelly both tweeted from Ground Zero, with Kelly sharing photos like the one below with her followers. Country artist and “The Voice” mentor Blake Shelton rejoiced by rewriting the lyrics to favorite songs to reflect his feelings.
We’ve gathered a sampling of a few celebrity tweets below.
