Studio estimates have the J.J. Abrams/Steven Spielberg sci-fi mystery “Super 8” opening to a robust $38 million, which is about $10 million above what pre-release estimates had the movie earning its opening weekend.
This makes “Super 8” the first live-action, original, non-sequel movie to garner the no. 1 spot at the box office in nearly three months. The last one was “Limitless” the weekend of March 18-20.
In the rest of the field, “X-Men: First Class” was second with $25 million, “The Hangover II” was third with $18.5 million. The only other new movie in the field, “Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer,” opened with a weak $6.3 million, putting it at the low end of the range of pre-release estimates.
