John Wayne is a beloved, swaggering national treasure — an actor whose career spanned five decades and brought us unforgettable performances in movies from “The Quiet Man” to “True Grit.” John Wayne Gacy (aka “The Killer Clown”) was a serial killer/kitsch artist who stalked his prey dressed as a character called “Pogo the Clown.”
But, to Republican presidential hopeful Michelle Bachmann, the two men are easily confused.
In a Tuesday interview with FOX News, Bachmann said Wayne (the actor) was from her hometown of Waterloo, Iowa and “that’s the kind of spirit that I have, too.”
It turns out, though, that it’s John Wayne *Gacy*, Serial Killer who once lived in Waterloo. While John Wayne, American Icon was in fact born in Iowa, it was in the town of Winterset, some 150 miles away.
When alerted to her mistake Bachmann quickly glossed over the gaffe, telling CNN she meant only that she identified with John Wayne’s patriotic spirit.
“I wish I could be perfect,” Bachmann said. “I’m a substantive, serious person” who has “good sense on how to turn the economy around.”
