Season 3 of “Castle” didn’t just end with the shooting of Beckett (Stana Katic). Captain Montgomery (Ruben Santiago-Hudson) also took a bullet in the dramatic finale — and unlike his subordinate, he won’t be making a recovery.

So who’s taking his place as the leader of the 12th Precinct and Beckett and Castle’s (Nathan Fillion) boss? As TV Guide was first to report, the job will go to Penny Johnson Jerald.

A television fixture since the early ’90s, the 50-year-old actress is probably best known for playing Beverly Barnes on HBO’s “The Larry Sanders Show” and the ex-wife to “24” president David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert).

Jerald will play Victoria “Iron” Gates, a by-the-book, career-minded cop who has little experience actually working in the field. Her desire to move up the chain of command will see her being harsher on the team than Montgomery — and likely not thinking too fondly of the special Castle/Beckett relationship.

We’ll see exactly how that plays out when “Castle” returns to ABC, Monday, Sept. 19, at 10:00 p.m. ET.
