Muggles turned out en masse for midnight showings of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” — the final installment in the series of movies based on J.K. Rowling’s popular boy wizard books.
The movie took in $43.5 million in ticket sales at Friday’s first midnight screenings and, according to The Wrap, sold out many theaters across the country.
“Deathly Hallows Part 2” smashed the previous record set in 2009 by “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.”
Based on the first numbers, the movie could be on track to become the highest grossing domestic opener of all time. “The Dark Knight” set the current record in 2008 with a $158.4 million opening weekend.
