When a beloved book franchise is turned into a movie, controversy over the casting is to be expected, so it’s no surprise that fans have been very vocal over Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson being cast as Katniss, Gale, and Peeta in “The Hunger Games.”
We’ll admit — we weren’t particularly psyched when Lawrence got the coveted gig, but after seeing her in costume as Katniss… and yes, with darker hair… we got on board. Now, EW reveals the first photo of the other points in this love triangle. Seeing Hemsworth and Hutcherson roughed up and dirty helps us to envision them in the roles a little bit better, but we’re still waiting on the first trailer to make our initial judgment.
Hutcherson is newly blond for the role — and, we’ll just say it: Hello, forearms! He also hopes to stamp out fears that Lawrence will dwarf him on screen. “Jennifer’s not two feet taller than me!” he tells the mag. “If anything, maybe she’s a half inch taller.”
As for Hemsworth, director Gary Ross thinks people were too quick to dismiss him. “On first glance he’s such a hunk that it’s easy to just sort of ascribe
a hunk-like simplicity to him,” Ross says. “But this is a
phenomenally subtle actor.”
