“The Smurfs” — a 3-D live action redux of the one-time Saturday morning cartoon staple — tied the Jon Favreau-directed, Steven Spielberg-produced “Cowboys and Aliens” for the weekend box office title. Both movies took in approximately $36.2 each in ticket sales.
Despite “Cowboys and Aliens'” solid critical reception, parents were obviously led to theater seats by their kids this weekend.
“I definitely think people underestimated us on this,” Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony Pictures, tells The Wrap.
Also opening this weekend, “Crazy, Stupid, Love” which grossed a respectable $19.3 million and generated fabulous word-of-mouth buzz.
Note: We have respected a Twitter plea from former “Lost” showrunner Damon Lindelof and resisted the urge to use any variation of the verb “smurf” in the headline for this story.
