“Torchwood: Miracle Day” has performed fairly well for Starz in its first few weeks, and it’s earned mostly positive reviews. But its future is anything but assured.
Starz CEO Chris Albrecht says the show’s future will depend largely on creator Russell T. Davies and whether — and how soon — he wants to return to the material.
“‘Torchwood’ is not one of the shows we went into thinking about a yearly return,” Albrecht told reporters Friday (July 29) at the Television Critics Association press tour. Davies, he notes, “has a lot of things on his plate. If ‘Torchwood’ is at the top of his list, that will affect the future of ‘Torchwood.'”
A longer-than-typical wait between seasons of “Torchwood” wouldn’t be unprecedented: Two years passed between the airing of “Children of Earth” and the premiere of “Miracle Day.” In his former gig as head of HBO, Albrecht also dealt with protracted delays between seasons of shows like “The Sopranos” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
