In the new issue of People magazine, “Conan the Barbarian” actress Rose McGowan details her unusual childhood growing up as a member of the Children of God sect in rural Italy.
“I did not want to be like those women,” says McGowan, who described the female members of the cult as subservient. “They were basically there to serve the men sexually.”
McGowan, now 38, says her father decided to leave the cult when he began to fear McGowan would be sexually molested.
“My dad was strong enough to realize that this hippie love had gone south.”
The actress has previously talked about living as a runaway with drag queens in Portland, Ore.
“There are people who will read this story and think I had a strange existence,” she says. “I think they’ve had a strange existence!”
