Last month when a five-week kitten was thrown from a moving car on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge that connects the NYV boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn, luck was on his side.
First, an Animal Care & Control officer happened to be driving on the bridge, saw the kitten get tossed and was able to rescue it. Then ABC’s “The View” chose the kitten, named “Verrazano” after the bridge where the incident went down, chose to include the story in their Hot Topics. Verrazano was on hand to make his national television debut and “View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg fell in love with the bundle of Russian Blue fur.
It pays to be an Oscar-winning actress that everyone knows. Despite over 150 people calling in and offering to give Verrazano a new home, Goldberg was picked to be his new mom. And she wasn’t even the only notable personality interested. Former U.S. Representative and Staten Island borough president Guy Molinari had also wanted to adopt him.
“It’s probably some young girl or boy on Staten Island that has the little pet and I was being selfish thinking I should have the cat and not some other Staten Islander,” he tells the Staten Island Real Time News, before quickly changing his tune upon hearing Goldberg had won Verrazano’s affections.
“Whoever had it, I thought, ‘Good luck to them.’ It’s hard to say good luck to Whoopi.”
Like any new parent, she has already taken to her Facebook page to share his new nickname, “Vinny,” post video of him grooming himself and share how he’s getting along with her other cat, Oliver.
“Oliver’s not too happy but Vinny is having the time of his life,” Goldberg says. “I think he’ll get Olicer to come around sooner than later.”
