Many are still reeling at the news that “Spartacus” star Andy Whitfield lost his triumphant battle with cancer at the young age of 39, leaving behind his wife and two children. His co-star on the successful Starz series, Lucy Lawless, released a warm statement about Whitfield shortly after the sad announcement.
“Obviously, Andy Whitfield left an indelible mark on all of us in the Spartacus family,” Lawless writes. “He was a gentle man who never said a bad word about anyone, a gifted photographer, engineer (no really!) and a brilliant actor. Andy’s incandescent film presence made men want to be him and women want to marry him. Andy’s two babies will always know that their Daddy cherished them and their mother, Vashti, above all things. How lucky we were to have him grace all our lives. Godspeed, Andy!”
“Spartacus” creator and showrunner Steven S. DeKnight simply tweeted, “No words to express the depth of such a loss. You will be deeply missed, my brother.”
When Zap2it spoke with Whitfield last, he was in remission and was overwhelmed by the fans’ support during his trials.
“I found it moving and profound,” he told us in the video below. “What a lovely connection to complete strangers.”
